License Terms

This document explains every license type a Creator can choose when uploading a model on Buya3DPrint, and exactly what rights a buyer has after purchase. Every rule here matches the platform's real, code-enforced logic exactly.

1. Ownership

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the Creator retains intellectual property ownership of their uploaded model. Buying or downloading a model does not transfer ownership — it grants a usage license within the scope defined below.

2. Base license types

• Personal Use: Printing and use for personal, non-commercial purposes only. Resale or commercial manufacturing is prohibited.
• Commercial Use: Commercial rights set directly by the Creator — see the model page's description.
• CC BY: Any use, including commercial, permitted with attribution.
• CC BY-SA: Free use with attribution, provided derivatives are shared under the same license.
• CC BY-NC: Non-commercial use only, with attribution.
• CC BY-NC-SA: Attribution + non-commercial + share-alike required.
• CC BY-ND: Use permitted with attribution, but no derivative works (remixes) may be created.
• CC BY-NC-ND: Non-commercial use with attribution, no derivatives.
• CC0: All rights waived — usable without restriction.
• GPL / MIT: Subject to the standard terms of the respective open-source license.
• Custom License: Whatever bespoke terms the Creator states in the model's description govern — the platform doesn't interpret or enforce these; it's a direct matter between Creator and buyer.

3. Commercial and enterprise license upgrades

Independent of the base license, some models offer additional, purchasable upgrades:

• Commercial License upgrade: Lets you sell physical prints made from the model in your own store or marketplace, without paying Buya3DPrint or the Creator anything further per sale. Covers one business/individual seller.
• Enterprise License upgrade: Everything in Commercial, plus use across multiple business units, bulk/production manufacturing runs, and use by more than one seller under the same organization.

Product decisionThese upgrades are only offered on non-members-only models — buying a commercial/ enterprise license can't be used to bypass a membership requirement (blocked server-side).

4. The remix (derivative model) system

Legal requirementPublishing a new model based on an existing one (a "remix") depends on the source model's license, and this rule is enforced automatically at the database level, server-side — not just a text warning:

• If the source license is CC BY-ND or CC BY-NC-ND, remixing is always blocked — even the Creator cannot override this.
• If the Creator has explicitly marked "remix not allowed" (allow_remix = false), remixing is blocked — regardless of license type.
• If the Creator has explicitly marked "remix allowed," remixing is permitted.
• Otherwise, models licensed CC0, MIT, GPL, CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, or CC BY-NC-SA are remixable by default.
• Every other case (e.g. "Personal Use", "Commercial Use", "Custom License") is blocked by default.

When a remix is published, a structural link (lineage) to the source model is kept and referenced on the model page — but the system does not auto-generate attribution text; if attribution is required by the source license (e.g. CC BY), you must add it yourself in the remix's description.

5. Resale and redistribution

Reselling or redistributing the STL/3MF file itself (as a raw file) is prohibited unless the license explicitly allows it (e.g. CC0, MIT, GPL). Selling physical prints is governed by the commercial/enterprise license rules above.

7. Physical-manufacturing authorization and license compatibility

Legal requirementA Creator can only check "allow physical manufacturing" for a model whose license actually permits commercial/physical use. This is enforced automatically at the database level, server-side — not just an interface warning; an attempt to enable physical manufacturing on a license that prohibits it is rejected.

• Not permitted: Personal Use, CC BY-NC, CC BY-NC-SA, CC BY-NC-ND, CC BY-ND.
• Permitted: Commercial Use, CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0, GPL, MIT.
• Custom License: the checkbox can be selected (the platform can't programmatically verify this license type's actual terms), but this relies solely on the Creator's own attestation — not platform-verified.

Product decisionCC BY-ND permits commercial use despite section 4's remix (derivative-work) ban above; whether printing an unmodified physical copy of a model legally counts as a "derivative work" is a genuinely debatable question in copyright law generally. Given this uncertainty, the platform's firm rule is: no CC BY-ND licensed model is ever authorized for physical manufacturing — this isn't just a text warning, it's an unchangeable restriction enforced at the database level (see section 7, Physical-Manufacturing Authorization).
